Usually, tales of human shrinkage are played for laughs, but Bunting explores the horror of Kyle's situation, placing a delicious villain at the center of her story. Mrs. Shepherd is a temperamental monster, who treats the children as cozy playthings and becomes sadistic when they dare to cross her. Much of the action involves Kyle's efforts to escape, until he finally hatches a plan that works.
